Gender-Based Violence Donation 2022

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a global campaign that runs annually from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day). In 2022, The Makazi Foundation joined the movement by hosting an online awareness campaign, which culminated in a donation to the Gender Justice Unit (GJU) in Lilongwe.

About the project

Starting point

According to the World Bank, 42% of girls in Malawi experience physical violence before the age of 18. The COVID-19 pandemic further worsened conditions for vulnerable girls and women, increasing isolation, stress, and the frequency of abuse.

While many initiatives provided emergency support, we were inspired by the Gender Justice Unit's commitment to long-term care and legal protection for survivors of GBV. This made GJU a natural partner for us in ensuring that survivors not only find refuge but also reclaim their dignity.

Support from local communities

To support the ongoing work of the GJU and to bring comfort and hope to survivors, The Makazi Foundation donated a variety of essential items, including:

  • Clothing and shoes

  • DVDs and a camera

  • Other practical and recreational items

These donations were made possible through the generosity of our community and supporters. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Gender Justice Unit for welcoming the collaboration and to every individual who contributed to this effort.
